Everything You Need To Know About a Cappuccino

Do you think you know everything about this famous coffee type, namely cappuccino? You might have heard this coffee name but you wouldn’t know much about this tasty coffee type. Nevertheless, today I’ll tell you what cappuccino is and from where did it originate?

What is a cappuccino?

I like cappuccino for its foam on top. But different people might like it for different reasons. Nevertheless, a cappuccino is an Italian coffee beverage, which is made using steamed milk and espresso. A traditional recipe of cappuccino uses an equal ratio of frothed milk, steamed milk, and espresso.

Generally, cappuccinos have no flavored sweeteners or syrups in them, though you can add them if you want. Today, cappuccino has become almost synonymous with coffee. Nearly all coffee shops have this coffee beverage on their menu, whether a local café or a high-end coffee house like Starbucks.

History of Cappuccino

During the early 1900s, espresso machines became quite popular and more and more people started thronging local coffee shops. At this time, cappuccinos came on the scene. They were served in the Viennese style, wherein they were topped with chocolate shavings and whipped cream.

The term ‘Cappuccino’ came from the Italian word, ‘cappuccio.’ Cappuccio was the name of the brown-colored hood worn by Capuchin friars. This was because the color of a cappuccino beverage, which is made of milk and coffee, was the same as the color of the hood of the friars.

Subsequent to World War II, modern espresso machines, like espresso machines with grinder, were enhanced and the recipe of cappuccino was simplified in order to create the cappuccino we know today. Cappuccino became quite popular in Europe and was generally had with breakfast. During the 1980s, cappuccino was introduced in America with everyone drinking it at any time of the day and not just in the morning.

How is cappuccino different from latte?

Even though a cappuccino has several similar elements like a latte, it’s not the same as a latte. Still, naïve coffee drinkers might find both these coffee beverages similar. Both these coffee beverages contain one espresso shot, though the milk is different. Lattes contain more quantity of steamed milk and a lesser quantity of foamed milk. The steamed milk gets mixed within the coffee. Hence, cappuccino has a stronger flavor of coffee.

How to make a cappuccino?

Making a cappuccino is quite easy. It is made as follows:

  1. First, you’ve to pour milk into a steaming pitcher.
  2. Then, you’ve to put the end of the steaming wand in the milk and turn on the machine, which will subsequently release the steam. The end of the wand must be at an angle and must stay below the surface.
  3. As the volume of the milk increases, you need to lower the pitcher.
  4. The milk needs to be steamed to 65 degrees Fahrenheit.
  5. Remove the wand when the milk is doubled in volume.
  6. Tap the pitcher on a flat area in order to compress the foam.
  7. Then, make one espresso shot, or two if you’re making a large cup of cappuccino, using the coffee machine.
  8. Pour the espresso shot at the cup’s base and then pour the milk. The trick is to pour the foamed milk from the middle towards the outside edge in a circular motion.
  9. Your cappuccino is now ready. Sip it slowly since it would be hot!

So, now you know most of the things about your favorite coffee beverage, that is, a cappuccino.
